Arrive at a catwalk in 2020, and while you’ll still have the mix of journalists and stylists that have always been there, there will also be a new kid on the block: the influencer. As you know by now, their opinion is worth so much when it comes to what is on-trend and what has reached its end. Influencers don’t usually tend to have a blog, and they aren’t editors either. What they do have, however, is a social media following on Instagram, the most image-centred platform.

The worth of an influencer is usually calculated by looking both at how many followers they have and who they are. We aren’t talking a few thousand and a couple of a hundred likes on each picture—only big numbers make noise.

Influencers are usually (but not always) paid by fashion brands to wear their clothes and accessories and post pictures to their profile. In 2019, Keeping Up With The Kardashians star Kylie Jenner was reportedly earning £915,000 per sponsored post.

With this in mind, we thought we’d delve into the world of shoes and focus our attention on the UK’s social media market. Our aim is to find Britain’s biggest ‘shoe-fluencer’. In order to find them, we trawled through Instagram, scouting Britain’s most-followed and cross-referencing them with Google Search trends around these celebrities’ names, accompanied by terms such as ‘boots’, ‘shoes’, and ‘trainers’. Here’s what we found…

Emma Watson

Britain’s most-followed woman on Instagram is former Harry Potter star and women’s rights activist Emma Watson. From a young age, Watson has been heavily involved in the fashion industry, featuring in Teen Vogue back in 2005 as a 15-year old and being awarded the British Elle Style Awards by Vivienne Westwood in 2011.

The term ‘Emma Watson boots’ has an average monthly search of 210. Whether she’s on the catwalk, a night out, or nipping to the shops, there is a plethora of snaps of Watson wearing black boots, either over the ankle or knee high boots—whatever the occasion, she makes the boot work!

The power couple

The most followed British person on Instagram is ex-Manchester United Footballer David Beckham. As one-fifth of Spice Girls, his wife Victoria Beckham is also up there on the list. For this reason, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Posh and Becks are the most searched shoe-fluencers in the UK.

The term ‘David Beckham boots’ has an average monthly search volume of 590, ‘David Beckham trainers’ has 210, while ‘David Beckham shoes’ has 110—Victoria’s contribution, meanwhile, should not be overlooked, with 210 average monthly searches for both ‘Victoria Beckham boots’ and ‘Victoria Beckham trainers’.

Considered football’s first global brand, Beckham has always been somewhat of a fashion icon among men, regularly breaking the conventional norm with his choices. In his younger days, it was a rarity to see Becks in anything other than a stylish pair of creps, but nowadays he’s become quite fond of traditional Chelsea boots—as much as we’re confident he’d hate to be associated with the Blues in any way.

Victoria Beckham, on the other hand, runs her own clothing brand, and ever since her time in the Spice Girls pre-millennium she has been recognised as an inspiration within the world of fashion. Interestingly, there has been a growth in interest in ‘Victoria Beckham trainers’. As of late, we’ve seen Posh pairing a variety of trainers with dress trousers, and we for one have no complaints—she more than pulls off the look!

Sam Smith

Singer Sam Smith is the UK’s tenth most followed Instagrammer and is often considered a major inspiration in the fashion industry, regularly turning heads on the red carpet. Smith’s choice in regard to shoes often attracts considerable attention, such as wearing 2.5-inch heeled boots as part of their perfectly androgynous look at the GQ Magazine Awards.

The term ‘Sam Smith trainers’ is the second most searched term, with an average of 320 average monthly searches, more than that of ‘Rita Ora boots’ or ‘Alexa Chung shoes’. However, Google returns searches connected to Adidas ‘Stan Smith’ trainers—clearly something that searchers are struggling with. For this reason, we couldn’t necessarily say that Sam exists as one of the top shoe-fluencers, but Google has him up there!

Harry Styles

Ever since arriving on the X-Factor back in 2010 as a baby-faced 16-year-old, Harry Styles became an instant heartthrob. One Direction’s past needs no introduction and after incredible success with the band, Styles went solo, which has proved once again successful. Surprisingly, he isn’t the One Direction member with the most Instagram followers, pipped by fellow singer and former member Zayn to the top spot. But it is in fact Styles who garners the most attention when it comes to footwear.

Google searches for the term ‘Harry Styles shoes’ have an average monthly return of 320, while ‘Harry Styles boots’ reels in a respective 140.

Did you know that there are plenty of celebrities with dark times in their past? Many have come back from time spent in jail and gone on to become successful and famous since. For some celebs, going to jail is even seen as a part of their character-building, and as something they have used as inspiration in their lives since.

That’s why we’ve looked at some of the celebrities who went to jail before finding fame. Some you may know about, others might shock you. The information can be checked via a nationwide inmate search.

Celebrities who were criminals before they were famous

Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. of Marvel movie fame went to prison after violating his probation. He had numerous run-ins with the law and in 1996, he was arrested for possessing heroin, cocaine and a pistol. The prison sentence for violating his probation is still on his permanent record, but he was granted a pardon in 2015 considering the fact that he has turned his life around since.

Robert Downey Jr. has gone on to become iconic in his role as Iron Man and is one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood.

Mark Wahlberg

Wahlberg has faced some serious charges in his time. The Hollywood actor has a troubled past and though he has apologised publicly for his actions, you can use a nationwide inmate search to see the injunctions filed against him.

He has been charged with race-related crimes and attempted murder. He pleaded guilty to felony assault. As he already had a civil rights injunction from previous claims, he was found to be in contempt of court and given a two-year sentence, of which he served just 45 days.

Wahlberg has supported the Black Lives Matter movement and has clearly come a long way since his teenage convictions.

Bill Gates

Of all of the people you might assume would have a history of getting arrested, Bill Gates might come as the biggest surprise. Bill Gates was arrested in 1977 when he was in his 20s. The arrest was due to a traffic violation.

The entrepreneur and computing pioneer has since given billions to charitable causes and become one of the best-known celebrities in the world due to his contribution to technology and Silicon Valley.

Tim Allen

Tim Allen is known as a great entertainer and comedic actor. In the 90s, he was incredibly famous and starred in a number of Hollywood movies. Before his success, he was involved in drug trafficking and found himself in serious trouble. Allen was arrested in 1978, when officers took him in at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport with over 1 pound of class A drugs on him. Though he could have served a life sentence he was able to cut a deal which led to him only spending two years in a Correctional Institution in Minnesota. Allen speaks openly about the fact that this was a “watershed moment” for him.

Stephen Fry

Stephen Fry is a household name in the UK and is known in the US for his roles in The Hobbit films, Alice in Wonderland, narrating the Harry Potter games and audiobooks as well as appearing in many television shows. When he was just 17, he was jailed in the UK for credit card fraud after stealing a family friend’s credit card and spending non-stop over a three month period.

Ian Somerhalder

Vampire Diaries star and Hollywood hunk Ian Somerhalder was arrested when he was just 17 for public drunkenness, and for underage drinking.

Somerhalder laughed off the offences somewhat, stating that “Every Senator’s son, every judge’s son, every high-school principal’s son, every cop’s son in Louisiana has gotten into trouble for alcohol consumption at some point in New Orleans.”

Matthew McConaughey

This is one story that we had to include. Matthew McConaughey was, to a degree, already famous when he was arrested back in the 90s. However, he was nowhere near the A-Lister he is today.

In 1999, McConaughey was said to be found playing the bongos loudly while dancing on top of a table under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. He was taken in “on suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting transportation.”

Although he was detained, he eventually got away with paying a small fine. Funny how this experience wasn’t highlighted in his Oscar award acceptance speech.

There are plenty of other examples of celebrities being arrested before they were famous. Jay-Z was taken in for drug possession at just 16, Danny Trejo has a long history of arrests and even the highest-paid actor in the world, The Rock, was arrested in his teens. The majority of these celebrities have gone on to turn their lives around and achieve incredible success.
