Demi Lovato uploaded an Instagram video this morning coming out as non-binary. Lovato declared to their 104 million Instagram followers, “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all—I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.”

The ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ singer continued saying “This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me.” Earlier this year, Lovato released their Dancing with the Devil documentary in March 2021; the YouTube series narrates the events leading up to Lovato’s eventual overdose in 2018 and subsequently their journey with sobriety.

When coming out as pansexual earlier this year, Lovato explained the reasoning behind their dramatic new haircut. Lovato said on The Ellen Show in February 2021, “I’ve talked a lot about my past and being in recovery from an eating disorder. I used to use my hair to hide behind. It would cover my body. So when I started doing all this work on myself, I thought, ‘What is something I’ve been holding onto my whole life that I need to let go of?’ And it was that. I feel more myself now.”

In a March 2021 interview with Glamour, Lovato said “I know who I am and what I am, but I’m just waiting until a specific timeline to come out to the world as what I am. I’m following my healers’ timeline, and I’m using this time to really study and educate myself on my journey and what I’m preparing to do.”

In a series of subsequent tweets after uploading her Instagram video, Lovato wrote, “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths and know I am sending so much love your way.”
