Saturday 28 May 2022, saw Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the Union of European Football Associations’ (UEFA) Champions League Final at the Stade de France near Paris. To kick it all off, former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello opened with a six-minute performance—featuring a mashup of hits including ‘Señorita’, ‘Havana’ and ‘Bam Bam’.

But it seems fans had other ideas, with supporters from both sides singing their teams’ anthems so loudly that they drowned Cabello out. The 25-year-old took to Twitter after her performance to call out the raucous crowd.

“Playing back our performance and I can’t believe people were singing their teams anthem so loud during our performance. Like my team and I worked tirelessly for so long to bring the right vibes and give a good show,” Cabello wrote.

About five minutes later in a follow up tweet she added, “Very rude but whatever. I’M GLAD U GUYS LOVED IT!!!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥰🥰🥰.”

The tweets have since been deleted but that hasn’t stopped football fans from attacking the artist online. Replying to an image she posted, presumably in response to Real Madrid scoring the winning goal, a Twitter user wrote, “You’ll never be Dua Lipa”—while another replied: “mid artist living off that one song you made half a decade ago.” Ouch.

It wasn’t all hate, however, as Cabello’s fans came to her aid and defended the artist, with one netizen pointing out the behaviour of attendees. “Being passionate is very different to being disrespectful,” they highlighted.

Meanwhile, another user tried to offer some solace to the singer, claiming it was nothing personal. ”No need for any performance before the Champions League final. The fans singing their songs wasn’t personal,” they wrote. Short of having The Beatles play, they’d have sung over anyone—they did not want a concert, and would have felt it detracted from the atmosphere.”

All of this, however, was ultimately overshadowed by events that took place outside the stadium—with angry fans being sprayed with tear gas due to delays in being admitted to the arena.
