I remember exactly where I was when I came across my first Hilaria Baldwin video. I was sitting in my living room at home, scrolling through TikTok and munching on some Wotsits, when I stumbled across a deep dive on the yoga instructor and her infamous ‘fake’ Spanish accent. The myth surrounding Baldwin’s accent has basically now become the gen Z internet equivalent of the Loch Ness Monster. And now it seems as though a certain comedian is jumping on the bandwagon.

For anyone unfamiliar with Baldwin and the accent chronicles, let me try and break it down for you. The 39-year-old was born in Boston in the US and vacationed in Spain annually as a child. Both of her parents grew up in the States and then moved to Mallorca in 2011, not long before their daughter married actor Alec Baldwin.

Over the years, Baldwin has been accused multiple times of cultural appropriation, predominantly because she often speaks publicly with a Spanish accent—an accent that also has a tendency to dip in and out, further pushing the idea that it is likely false or put on. Don’t fret though and worry you’ll need to hunt down all of the videos so that you can see the charade for yourself, our fellow netizen mythbusters have done the work for us:

The Hilaria story, or Hillary I should say if I wanted to use her birth name, normally makes the rounds once or twice a year. In this particular occasion, accentgate was brought back to our attention after comedian Amy Schumer mocked the yoga instructor during her recent Netflix special, Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact. Not exactly sure who at Netflix thought Schumer needed a new comedy special but anyways.

During the show, Schumer asked a live audience if they knew who Baldwin was, before pronouncing her name in a Spanish accent. The comedian went on to reminisce on when she first met Baldwin years before, backstage at SNL. Schumer claimed that when Hilaria introduced herself, she did so with a “very thick Spanish accent.” Schumer went on to mimic the accident and joke: “I’m Hilaria, from España.”

To top things off, she also made fun of the Badlwins for having so many children. “They have a von Trapp amount of children, and they named them all, I’m not sure, but very Spanish names like Jamón, Croqueta, and Flamenco. And all of this would be fine and beautiful, except that ‘Hilaria from España’ is actually Hillary from Boston,” Schumer concluded.

#AmySchumer goes after "sociopath" #HilariaBaldwin for pretending to be from Spain in her new #Netflix special.

Whenever Baldwin has addressed any of these comments or jokes in the past, she’s always placed emphasis on her love and connection to Spain, and how she feels deeply entwined with the country’s culture. What doesn’t seem to make sense though is if absolutely zero members of your family are Spanish, and you predominantly reside in the US, why on earth do you still go around faking a Spanish accent? Make it make sense, Hillary.
