Shocking footage has surfaced online showing the devastating effects of climate change on the coasts of Guatemala, and the horrific plastic pile-up that has settled there. So, if you’ve ever thought about starting to recycle more, hopefully, this video is the push that you need.

According to The Independent, 4Ocean, a business and ocean clean-up company, shared the video on their TikTok page in order to highlight the state of the Central American country’s coastline.

The company has estimated that approximately 80 per cent of ocean plastic such as this comes from “mismanaged waste” on land. In Guatemala, for example, there’s only one rubbish dump for the entire country.

Another ocean clean-up organisation, the ocean clean-up, has stated that humans produce over 400 million metric tons of plastic annually, which is roughly the weight of all humans on the planet. Ocean pollution is a global issue that’s previously been dismissed and considered less of a humanitarian priority. However, now—with people finally taking notice—it seems as though we might’ve left it far too late.
