Jason Derulo is certainly no stranger to controversy. In the past, the ‘Whatcha Say’ singer has been accused of cheating on his wife and mother of his son, Jena Fumes. This caused much uproar and ridicule online, mostly because one of his biggest hits is about cheating. Ironic, huh?

And while netizens might also be familiar with the heavy objectification in Derulo’s music, I’m guessing not everyone knows about the real-life indiscretions the singer has allegedly committed.

Singer Emaza Gibson is currently suing Derulo for sexual harassment. In the filings, Gibson stated that the singer recruited her to his record label a joint venture between his music imprint, Future History, and Atlantic Records. Then he harassed her for dates and sex in exchange for working with her. After refusing his advances, the singer was allegedly dropped from the label.

“I’m at this point in my life right now, it’s very heartbreaking. I have anxiety; I’m traumatized. I’ve dealt with inhumane work situations. I’m at this point where I’m back to zero and I have nothing.” Gibson said during an NBC News interview shared on Wednesday 4 October 2023.

According to Gibson, Derulo also suggested that she “partake in ‘goat skin and fish scales’,” to succeed in the music industry. ‘Fish scale’ refers to the drug cocaine in its purest, most refined and potent form—a fact that Gibson was aware of. However, after a search online, the singer discovered that ‘goat skin’ referenced to Haitian rituals revolving around sex, goat sacrifices and blood. Derulo is familiar with elements of Haitian culture because he was born to a Haitian family and has stated in the past that Haitian Creole was his first language.

The lawsuit also alleges that Derulo pressured Gibson to drink alcohol when she did not want to and repeatedly refused to. Furthermore, the singer listed a number of occasions where Derulo exhibited aggressive behaviour. For example, she mentioned a recording session where Derulo threw a fit in a way that made her fear for her safety, all simply because Gibson came in late due to traffic.

After she was dropped from Atlantic and Future History, Gibson, along with the help of her mother and manager tried to contact human resources at both labels via email. However, no one responded to discuss Derulo’s “sexually, emotionally and physically inappropriate behaviour,” the suit says.

Derulo has since come forward to deny the allegations on Instagram, stating that he was “deeply offended by these derogatory claims.”
