The news, which consisted of very sparse evidence such as Selena and Benny recently following each other on Instagram, was treated with suspicion by their respective fandoms at first. That was until Selena entered the conversation and shut the speculation down with one word: “Facts.”

Unfortunately, Selena’s fans responded less than enthusiastically to her new romance.

“We love you Sel but we are afraid that he is not a good man,” a Gomez fan account commented under the picture. “Manic episode! @selenagomez where’s your doctor?” a different fan replied.

Another Instagram user joked: “When I think I have low standards for men, I think of Selena and automatically forget about it.” “No, the Matty Healy phase…” someone else replied, referencing the backlash Taylor Swift received when she started dating singer Matty Healy.

Most of the negativity was centred around the fact that fans perceived Blanco to be less attractive than Gomez.

Consequently, Gomez decided to step in once more and defend her new beau.

In another comment, the ‘Come & Get It’ singer revealed that she was quite happy and fulfilled in her new relationship, despite what fans may think: “He has treated me better than any human being on this planet.” Further, the star went on to explain that Blanco was “better than anyone” she’s ever been with and that he is “absolute everything in her heart.”

“I don’t understand. If you actually care about me. This is my happiest,” she protested. When the mood in the comments section didn’t seem to lighten up about her declaration of love, Gomez further added: “If you can’t accept me at my happiest then don’t be in my life at all.” Ouch!

A lot of fans found the way in which the pop star jumped to her new boyfriend’s defence more entertaining than the actual news. After all, Selena Gomez rarely spends much of her precious time online, especially because she has a habit of getting into feuds every time she does…

Nevertheless, a lot of true Selenators also defended the star’s new romance, noting that her happiness comes first. “Don’t pay attention to those bad comments, your true Selenators. Let’s repeat all the decisions that make you happy and take you to a sweeter place. You are a great woman, you deserve to move forward and be with whoever you choose #respectforselena,” one fan reacted. Someone else advised: “Selena stop answering to hate comments about your relationship, focus on that, this is not worth it, trust me.”

Meanwhile, Pop Factions used Selena’s comments as footage for its next story aptly titled: Selena Gomez seemingly confirms that she is in a relationship.

Well, at least the one good thing we got out of this mess was a much-needed update about Gomez’s relationship status. “Rest in peace TikToks of Selena saying she’s single,” one Instagram user responded. And honestly, I miss them already.
