Camille Vasquez—one of Johnny Depp’s now-infamous attorneys—has spoken out about what it means to her to have become an “inspiration” for young women. Vasquez rose to internet fame when she represented the Pirates of the Caribbean actor in his highly publicised multi-million dollar defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.

After jurors announced last week that Depp had won the court case, Vasquez and Ben Chew—another of the star’s lawyers—appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America to chat about the trial.

Anchor George Stephanopoulos commented on how both attorneys had become “social media stars” during the trial and asked how they had reacted to their sudden fame. “It’s been surreal and if I’m being honest, a bit overwhelming,” revealed Vasquez.

She went on to say that it would all be worth it if she could influence other young women to become lawyers, adding: “If I can be an inspiration to young women that want to go to law school and study and work hard then it was all worth it.”

The female lawyer became a fan favourite during the trial, winning praise for her cross-examination of Heard. People were so impressed by her performance that as soon as the jury announced their verdict, netizens demanded she receive a promotion, which she did end up getting, along with many other alleged job offers.

Vasquez has since been promoted to partner at her law firm, Brown Rudnick. Chairman and CEO William Baldiga announced the promotion personally in a statement, saying, “We are delighted to welcome Camille to the partnership. Historically, we have reserved this announcement for the end of our fiscal year. But Camille’s performance during the Johnny Depp trial proved to the world that she was ready to take this next step now.”

“We are incredibly proud of her and look forward to what she will accomplish as our newest partner,” Baldiga concluded.

Vasquez herself joined him in commenting on her promotion, saying she is “delighted that Brown Rudnick has given me its full vote of confidence by having me join the partnership.”

“I’m proud of the uniquely talented team I’ve had the privilege to lead, which exemplified teamwork and collaboration, and I look forward to continuing to represent Brown Rudnick’s culture of excellence,” she added.
