The world of anime is filled with characters from all walks of life. From young superheroes in training to a family of spies, the sheer amount of creativity and imagination that goes into these creations is astounding to say the least. And of course, anime fans all have their favourite characters who they revere above all others. But really, it’s the villains that they love to discuss the most. Some of these characters have done the most diabolical things imaginable, so the hate they receive is understandable. Join us as we count down the top ten most hated anime characters of all time.

10. Minoru Mineta from ‘My Hero Academia’

Although he may be low on the list, Minoru Mineta has every right to be included in it. From the extremely popular show My Hero Academia, Mineta is the token ‘pervert’ character that most anime have. But Mineta always takes it a step too far. From groping other characters to being given questionable piggyback rides, every untoward scene featuring the character leaves you with a slightly sick feeling. But the moment that cements his place on this list is when he said this line to Eri, a 6-year-old female character: I’m Mineta, I can’t wait to see how you look in ten years.” Utterly despicable.

9. Malty Melromarc from ‘The Rising of the Shield Hero’

Malty Melromarc from Rising of the Shield Hero is the definition of two-faced. She is known across the anime community, even by those who haven’t watched the show, and began trending in 2022 after netizens compared her to Amber Heard.

Melromarc is hated for falsely and purposely accusing the show’s main character Naofumi of raping her. This ruined Naofumi’s reputation with his fellow adventurers and essentially his life too. Such an act deserves a spot on the list.

8. Frieza from ‘Dragon Ball Z’

Frieza from Dragon Ball Z is one of the most cruel and evil antagonists out there, and his list of crimes goes on and on. Where to start? Maybe with the fact he enslaved a whole race just because he thought them inferior to his own and then committed mass genocide by destroying their planet? Or maybe the fact that he blew up Goku’s best friend, Krillin, right in front of him? Yeah, this guy is evil.

7. Envy from ‘Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’

Introducing the literal embodiment of the sin, Envy. Envy is a sly, conniving character able to shapeshift into any form they so desire. They’re not only the cause of a very prominent war in the anime, but are also responsible for the death of Maes Hughs, a widely loved character. Just for that, Envy belongs here.

6. Sakura Haruno from ‘Naruto’ and ‘Naruto Shippuden’

For those who grew up watching Naruto, you’ll understand this one. While Sakura Haruno isn’t a bad person so to speak and she has always been there for her teammates, she doesn’t exactly add much to the series. For pretty much all of the original Naruto anime, Haruno spends most of her time whining about not being good enough and generally just getting in the way. Granted, in Naruto Shippuden she becomes a lot more useful after being taught by the powerful ninja Tsunade, but even then she has some questionable moments which often left fans with a bad taste in their mouths.

5. Danzo Shimura from ‘Naruto Shippuden’

Danzo Shimura is one of the sneakiest, most sly and despicable characters in all of anime history—responsible for the almost complete annihilation of the Uchiha clan. Heck, he even tried to have his life-long friend, the third Hokage, killed simply because he thought he was weak. But probably the worst thing Shimura has done is leak that the titular character, Naruto, has the fearsome nine-tailed fox sealed inside of him, which lead to our hero being shunned and bullied throughout his whole childhood. Not cool.

4. Nobuyuki Suguo from ‘Sword Art Online’

Sword Art Online (SAO) is the anime that all gamers wish was real life. Much like Meta’s metaverse, SAO takes place in a hyper-advanced virtual reality online role playing game. Long story short, if players get trapped and die in the game, they die in real life too. At the end of the first season, after everyone was rescued, Nobuyuki Suguo thought it was a brilliant idea to imprison 300 people, alongside the heroine Asuna, just as the SAO servers shut down only to use them as guinea pigs in his mind-control experiments.

Hate him already? Wait, it gets worse. Suguo repeatedly harassed the captured heroine, having claimed this was justified by the fact that he had been promised her hand in marriage. He was also fully aware that the show’s main character, Kirito, was in love with Asuna, and nevertheless went as far as to restrain Kirito and force him to watch as he sexually assulted his love interest. He then set Kirito’s pain absorbers to zero so that he could feel every moment of torture. And the list goes on—this man is deplorable.

3. Seryu Ubiquitous from ‘Akame Ga Kill’

Ever heard the phrase ‘looks can be deceiving’? Seryu Ubiquitous is the epitome of the saying. Sweet looking and with a strong sense of justice, at first, Ubiquitous seems like a lovely character you’d want to hang out with. Oh, how wrong you’d be. Her sense of justice is warped beyond belief. If she deems someone evil, then they deserve to die. She seems to genuinely enjoy killing, and to make matters worse, she has even replaced some of her body parts to execute her job more efficiently , if you can call killing potentially innocent people ‘executing your job more efficiently’. Not to mention that she brutally murdered Sheele, a well-loved character in the series, without an inch of remorse.

2. Gabi Braun from ‘Attack on Titan’

Oh boy, we’re nearly there. At number two, we have Gabi Braun from Attack on Titan. Obsessed with war and killing, this hypocrite has no aversion to running onto the battlefield and tricking the enemy with nasty surprises. But the real reason Braun is hated so intensely is because she killed Sasha—affectionately referred to by fans as ‘potato girl’ for stealing a potato to eat all the way back in season one. Honestly, even with her redemption arc, I don’t think anyone has forgiven Braun…

1. Shou Tucker from ‘Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’

And here we are. Number one on our list is the most despicable, deplorable, vile and inhumane character in any anime ever, Shou Tucker. Just the mere mention of his name is enough to invoke a horrified reaction in any anime fan. But why is he so hated, you ask? Well, Tucker is a State Alchemist who specialises in bio-alchemy and creating Chimaeras—a creature made by combining other animals.

In his frantic attempts to create a fully functioning Chimaera and meet research deadlines, Tucker not only experimented on his own wife, but also gruesomely combined his pet dog and  5-year-old daughter. What’s even worse is that Tucker felt absolutely no remorse for killing his family, claiming it all to be in the name of science and alchemy. This man deserves every ounce of hate he receives.
