Machine Gun Kelly, the renowned rapper known for his controversial deliveries and his relationship with Megan Fox, has recently stirred headlines with a significant changeāa name transformation. The artist, whose real name is Colson Baker, opted to simplify his moniker from āMachine Gun Kellyā to simply āmgk.ā
Explaining the origin of his stage name, Baker disclosed in a biography on Talent First Avenue that he acquired the name due to his rapid-fire delivery during performances at the age of 15. However, in recent years, some fans and critics have raised concerns, arguing that the name may glorify gun violence. Notably, during a September 2022 concert in Iowa, YouTubers Chad and JT protested, urging the rapper to change his name by displaying a sign that read, āChange Your Name!!!ā Their motive was to eliminate the 33-year-oldās association with āmachine gunsā to avoid celebrating them. Thus, the rapper decided to seek the audienceās opinion on this matter, prompting applause.
The first notable sign of a potential name change emerged at the GQ Awards in 2023 when the rapper requested photographers to refer to him as āMachineā instead of āMachine Gun.ā Speculation gained momentum when Bakerās comments and online activity hinted at a shift towards this new moniker.
The official confirmation came with the release of his recent single, āDonāt Let Me Goā, on 21 February 2024, marking the debut under his new name, mgk.
Surprised? Well, the rapper hasnāt shied away from the limelight. Whether heās dropping verses about Foxās miscarriage, or taking to social media to showcase his latest tattoo (a bold black block concealing his prior inkings, adorned with a stark cross on his chest).
The extensive tattoo, executed by artist Roxx, took a total of 13 six-hour sessions, employing over 44 needles to complete the intricate design.
And thatās not all. The rapper has also shared details about engaging in rituals with Fox, involving the unconventional practice of drinking each otherās blood. It seems that mgk is determined to keep us on our toes, surprising us with each new revelation.
However, not every aspect of mgkās artistic choices has been universally praised. In January, he faced backlash for the design of his new signature guitar, fashioned to resemble a razor blade. Responding to critics, the rapper expressed reluctance to explain his art, emphasising its interpretive nature: āIāll never explain my art, because true art is conversational and always up for interpretation. But I will say, that most of you constantly interpret it wrong. And then blame me for your version of what you think my art is. Ultimately Iām sad at how people perceive me in general. Peace.ā
