Sabrina Carpenter’s music video for Feather gets priest fired from his church
If you’re an engaged netizen, you’re probably familiar with the song ‘Feather’ by blonde fairy goddess Sabrina Carpenter. After all, the song’s hashtag currently has around 20.7 million views on TikTok and they can’t all be from me… The music video for the bop was released on 31 October 2023 and has racked in 11.7 million views on YouTube since its premiere. However, it seems as though one particular Catholic priest was relieved from his duties due to his involvement.

Several parts of the music video were shot in and outside of Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Annunciation church in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It shows Carpenter dancing through the church in a short black tulle dress and veil. The singer makes her way up the centre aisle, onto the altar, which is lined with pastel-coloured coffins, and then back down the aisle and out the front door, apparently celebrating the death of several men in the video. One of the coffins even reads the words “RIP B*tch.”
In other scenes of the music video, Carpenter appears to be splattered with blood after a fight over her at a gym, hangs a man by his tie in an elevator after he objectifies her, and strolls past two young men reading a book titled Tampons Should Be Free, who get hit by a bus after exposing themselves as what Doja Cat would call “fake woke misogynists” by catcalling the singer. So you can probably understand people’s excitement around the video now. I mean, who doesn’t like a playful feminist revenge narrative, right?

Seemingly, the answer to this question is… The Catholic church. I know, no one is surprised. The Diocese of Brooklyn, led by Bishop Brennan, denounced the video in a statement to the Catholic News Agency, saying he was “appalled at what was filmed.”
The bishop claimed that Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello, the church’s pastor, “did not follow diocesan policy regarding the filming on Church property, which includes a review of the scenes and script.”
Gigantiello, who allowed filming to take place, stated on the church’s Facebook page that he did a “general search” of Sabrina Carpenter and didn’t find anything “questionable” content, which is why he agreed to let filming take place. The monsignor noted that he deeply regretted his decision, which was made in an effort to “strengthen the bonds between the young creative artists who make up a large part of this community.”
The pastor, who has now been relieved of his administrative oversight of the parish, also stated that the production company “failed to accurately represent the video content.”
In response to the video, Bishop Brennan celebrated a Mass of Reparation, which supposedly “restored the sanctity of this church and repaired the harm.”
Carpenter hasn’t commented on the incident so far, she’s probably too busy slaying men.
