Alicia Framis is set to become the first person ever to marry an AI-powered hologram. Yep, you read that right.

The Spanish artist is pushing boundaries and challenging societal norms with her groundbreaking project—tying the knot with AiLex, her AI companion.

Framis, known for her immersive performance art, has a history of dissecting the complexities of love and companionship. In a previous ‘relationship’, she lived with a mannequin named Pierre, offering a unique perspective on the intricacies of human connection. Now, in a bold move, she catapults into the future, exploring the intersection of art and artificial intelligence.

The artist frequently shares insights into her unconventional relationship on her Instagram page @hybridcouples. On this account, she noted that the next significant step in this evolving landscape is to emotionally engage humans with AI.

In one of her posts, she reflects, “We know that soon robots and humans will be sexual partners, but for me, the next important step is emotionally involving artificial intelligence with humans.”

While hologram technology exists, it remains constrained by exorbitant costs and impracticality, providing only a glimpse into a potential future where AI and human emotions intertwine. The forthcoming performance series, which will feature the artist’s wedding ceremonies, is slated to unfold at the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, with tantalising hints of a potential tour to other venues.

There is already a niche and profitable industry dedicated to creating realistic sex dolls. Abyss Creations, for example, produces the RealDoll. In 2023, the company’s founder, Matt McMullen, revealed that he was exploring ways to incorporate artificial intelligence into the dolls.

Meanwhile, David Levy, AI expert and author of Love and Sex with Robots, predicts that by 2050, relationships, sexual encounters, and even marriages with robots could become commonplace.

As society grapples with the increasing sophistication of AI, Framis’ work emerges as a captivating exploration of uncharted territories, inviting us to ponder the future of relationships in this ever-evolving technological era.
