As long as there have been Halloween celebrations, there have been highly inappropriate and in poor taste costumes to go with it. And it seems as though this year has been no different. Schitt’s Creek actress Emily Hampshire, best known for her role as Stevie in the Emmy Award-winning show, has had to make a public apology for making light of the abuse between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard this spooky season.

You would have to go very far to find someone who wasn’t aware of the serious upset and abuse that occurred between Depp and Heard, all of which was closely documented during the heated trial the two went through back in 2022. While it’s evident that both parties had their flaws during their relationship, both Heard and the evidence made it clear that she was a victim of domestic abuse.

Therefore, you can imagine how distasteful it would be to dress up as the pair and practically make light of this situation purely to try and win the best costume of the year.

In case you haven’t seen the images of Hampshire and her friend dressed up as Heard and Depp, you can thank Twitter for hoarding all of the evidence:

Some people were naturally deeply disturbed by these images and openly criticised the actress for being so thoughtless with her actions. One netizen noted: “To Emily Hampshire, Katelyn Ohashi, and anyone else who dressed up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard for Halloween: What exactly is it about Amber being abused by Johnny, or any woman being abused by their partner, that you find so damn hilarious?”

Hampshire later posted an apology to her Instagram stating that it was “one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things [she’s] ever done,” and that she was “deeply sorry” and “ashamed” for putting something like that out into the universe.

I know the classic vampire or witch look can sometimes feel a bit tired, but at least it isn’t offending anyone.
