Just when we thought that the era of the girlies had reached its peak, Amazon Prime turned around and gifted us with the trailer for The Idea of You—a movie based on author Robinne Lee’s brainchild, aka a book that captured everyone’s favourite teenage fantasy: what if I go to a concert and the lead singer of the band falls in love with me? I can’t even tell you the amount of hours I lost daydreaming about this exact scenario.

Adding to the stan allure of this movie is the fact that it was based on fanfiction about, drumroll please, British heart-throb and performer extraordinaire Harry Styles. I repeat, following the ending of the After franchise (may it rest in peace), we are getting another movie based on fanfiction about everyone’s favourite English pretty boy.

So, as you can imagine, the release of the trailer produced a more than enthusiastic response from the girlies online. So let’s take a look at the movie aiming to breathe new, girly life into the rom-com genre this summer!

What is ‘The Idea of You’ about?

The book and corresponding movie are about the May-December romance that unfolds between protagonists Solène Marchand and Hayes Campbell. Marchand, a thirty-nine-year-old owner of a prestigious art gallery in Los Angeles, takes her 12-year-old daughter to a concert of the world-famous band August Moon at the behest of her ex-husband. When she meets the lead singer Campbell, a clever, winning, confident, and posh British lad, the attraction is immediate.

The two become engulfed in a passionate love affair that both of them draw significant joy and artistic inspiration from. Despite their age gap and significantly different geographical locations, their loves seem to span across continents and societal expectations. It’s wild to imagine your mother dating Harry Styles because most rom-coms cut off their female leads at 35. But, if wild, refreshing and deliciously indulgent is what you like, this franchise might just be your thing.

Who is going to star in ‘The Idea of You’?

Me! No, I’m just kidding. I wish I was fortunate enough to star alongside Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, but I am not that blessed. Perhaps I should just get to writing my own fan fiction… However, this movie will also feature Venom star Reid Scott and Gossip Girl graduate Ella Rubin.

Are there any fun surprises?

I’m glad you asked. Galitzine and his new boyband have actually recorded multiple songs for the soundtrack to give fans the full August Moon experience. As the release date approaches, we can expect more of the songs that have been teased in the trailer to be released. To the surprise of absolutely no one, there are a number of songs that are giving serious One Direction vibes.

Alongside this, the band’s social media and Spotify accounts with original music and imagery have been launched.

To round it all up, the band’s official posters have also been shared online. Netizens were excited to spot more homages to One Direction, notably the soft boy-style hats, arm-in-arm poses, and undeniable charming mix of the best boys the UK has to offer. It’s all around a good time.
