Calling all UK-based gen Z: We want to pay your rent

The rental crisis in the UK is no joke. A lot of us left our small towns with hopes of living it up in the big city, and I think I can speak for all of us when I say that the mould-infested, lousy landlord-filled, and bed bug-overrun reality that we were greeted with has not exactly been a dream come true.

The rental market is broken, with prices rising at their fastest rate in nine years. And it’s gen Z who’re feeling the brunt of this crisis. SCREENSHOT spoke with gen Zers across the UK and discovered that 47 per cent have had to move back home with their parents and 86 per cent don’t trust the UK government to fix the renting crisis.

As emphasised by SCREENSHOT Media’s founder and CEO Shira Jeczmien in City AM: “Very few people in politics or the media seem to care that a cohort of young people is currently being cut off from opportunities in desirable careers because industries are still concentrated in big cities that the young can no longer afford to live and work in. It isn’t just jobs—so much culture is similarly concentrated. Who knows what that lack of access will do to generational social mobility?”

Throw in the ongoing cost of living crisis, as well as a Tory government that is next-level useless, and you have a population of young Brits that are feeling more disenfranchised than ever.

As a way to try and communicate our shared frustration with this issue, we’ve launched a giveaway competition. The winner will receive £1,000 to go towards one month’s worth of rent.

To get involved, there are only three things you need to do:

1. Like this post
2. Comment and tag 2 friends who need a rent boost
3. Follow @screenshothq on Instagram

The only terms and conditions are that you must be UK-based and you must be 18 or over. The winner will be notified and announced on 13 November 2023 via Direct Message.

We know that this giveaway will in no way shape or form change the current economic landscape and is only a small solution to an ever-growing problem. What really needs to happen is that the current government needs to take drastic action to address these crises. Gen Z is not a generation willing to wait and stay silent.
