In a surprising turn of events, American media personality Kim Kardashian and former US President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump were recently spotted at the grand opening of luxury hotel Fontainebleau Las Vegas. The star-studded event featured a performance by Justin Timberlake, drawing in other celebrities such as Sylvester Stallone, Tom Brady, Lenny Kravitz, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Alice Cooper, and Kardashian’s supermodel sister, Kendall Jenner.

Ivanka Trump shared a glimpse of the night on social media, posting pictures from the celebration. Little did she anticipate the storm that would brew in the comments section though, as supporters of her father unleashed a wave of criticism.

Social media reactions ranged from confusion to disapproval, with comments like “Whyyyyyy Ivanka??????” and “Ivanka and Kim. Sad to see someone like her with you. She hates your father.” In a not-so-surprising move, the majority of Trump supporters expressed their disdain for Kardashian, citing her previous support for current commander-in-chief Joe Biden in the 2020 US presidential elections as a point of contention.

This public disapproval stems from rumours that during Trump’s last days in office, he turned against Kardashian for not backing him in the election and stated: “Kim Kardashian is the most overrated celebrity in the world,” despite their previous collaboration on prison reforms. The tension escalated to the point where Trump reportedly hung up on the businesswoman during a phone call.

Despite the criticism, Ivanka Trump’s post garnered over 137,000 likes, showcasing the polarised opinions surrounding the unexpected friendship. As shown above, the comments section became a battleground between those questioning her choice of company and those defending her right to socialise with whomever she pleases.

Interestingly, the friendship between Trump’s daughter and Kardashian has a history that predates this recent event. The two initially connected nearly a decade ago at the 2014 Met Gala, bonding over motherhood and their shared interest in criminal justice reform. According to US Weekly: “Kim and Ivanka have been friends for years and have hung out on a number of occasions.”

Over the years, they maintained their friendship, with Kardashian even successfully petitioning then-President Trump to commute the life sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, a nonviolent drug offender.

In October 2022, amid Kanye West’s latest downward spiral in the public spotlight, Kardashian and Ivanka Trump were spotted having dinner together at the Polo Lounge in Los Angeles. This unexpected duo resurfaced in October 2023 during Kardashian’s birthday celebrations when they were photographed together with Lauren Sanchez, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée.
