We’ve all been there: after a long day, you sink into your sofa and start scrolling through Netflix’s homepage, on the hunt for something to take your mind off things. Ten minutes later, you’re still scrolling, unable to find a single contender that feels just right. Five minutes later, you’re ready to throw the towel in and settle for your go-to show, whether that’s Friends, The Office, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Gilmore Girls. But what if I told you that there’s a list of secret category codes you can use on Netflix to access some genres and subgenres you’ve never been suggested before?

Before I let you in on how to order off the secret menu if you will, let’s first go over the reason why Netflix seems to always recommend similar movies and TV shows, even when you’re in the mood to dig for something entirely fresh and different.

To put it simply, the streaming giant’s algorithm works in a very similar way to the TikTok algorithm—it collects information about the type of content you like and don’t like, and recommends you more similar options. It might throw you a curveball here and there, but that’s probably in an attempt to promote one of Netflix’s new shows.

As confirmed by Tudum, aka the official companion site to Netflix, this mysterious list of category codes dates back to the earliest days of the company, when it was still in its DVDs-only phase. Rumour has it, a very dedicated fan scraped the genre tree for all the codes and shared the list online. From there, other individuals have helped update the list with the thousands more that have been added since.

In case you’re curious as to how some of these more recent categories are created, it appears that the Netflix team draw insipration from anything and everything. For example, when Pete Davidson rapped about wanting to watch “short-ass movies” on Saturday Night Live in 2022, the streaming platform responded with a collection of the same name.

Before you fall down this rabbit hole, however, it should be noted that users wanting to explore these collections can only do so through their web browser. Start by typing in netflix.com/browse/genre/ and then add a specific ID code to the end of the URL. This basically automatically directs you into one of Netflix’s many subfolders for every subgenre of the TV and cinema world, no matter how bizarre. With this method, all available titles are displayed, not just the first 20, as usual on the Netflix homepage.
